I began singing in nursing homes when I was 10 years old with some of my
pageant sisters to entertain the residents. I got a new Chihuahua puppy
named Little Miss shortly after that. She was not your ordinary Chihuahua,
she was a "people person"!!! I decided to start bringing her to the nursing
homes with me and let her amuse the residents. The residents just LOVED her
and Little Miss loved them right back. That is how Project Puppy Love first
began. I did some research and found out that pets are known to reduce
stress levels, lower blood pressures and prolongue lives. So Little Miss is
our pet therapy dog and she couldn't be happier! I hope that with Project
Puppy Love, I can teach people the benefits of pet ownership and to adopt a
sweet dog, cat or whatever, at their local humane shelters.
Another campaign that I am very involved in is Love Letters: Random Cards of
Kindness. This campaign is designed to have anyone who wants to participate,
make handmade cards where they later get distributed to terminally ill
children around Florida. Love Letters was started in Orlando by Kaitlyn
Chana. I began a local chapter of Love Letters at my school in September
2007. We met every Tuesday and made over 200 cards before the winter
break.....Great job everyone!!! I have since moved schools and am working on
starting another chapter. This is a wonderful way to get my peers involved
in community service and they love it.
Finally, another project that I participate in is Tyler's Tabs. A friend of
mine named Tyler started collecting tabs off of soda cans and bringing them
to the recycling plant where he is given cash for every pound of tabs. He
was actually able to deliver over 600 pounds of tabs during one trip to the
recycling plant. All the money is donated to the Ronald McDonald house. I
encourage everyone I know to collect tabs for me to pick up once a month a
deliver to Tyler. This is another great way to get my peers involved in
doing something positive for someone less fortunate than us. |
